Sailing Trip Brittany – Chasing Clouds Route

Sail Atlantic Shores

Sailing Trip in Brittany

Welcome to the legendary land of Asterix and Obelix. Welcome to the French kingdom of Celts. Welcome to Brittany!

Following our desire of exploring new sailing grounds we were driven to organize a sailing trip in French waters. While preparing this trip we realized that Bretons must be in love with sailing as the shores of Brittany are dotted with moorings, ports, perfect anchorages, and little villages filled with private sailing boats. Sailing is a real passion of Bretons!

This sailing trip is for those who would like to explore the French coast on a sailboat. Keen sailors will appreciate the tidal sailing, exploring river estuaries, passing through locks and sailing on daily sea breezes. Cultural explorers will find it fascinating to visit megalithic sites and tombs, stroll through medieval cities or enjoy café culture in little port villages listening to the slowly fading Celtic dialect. Nature lovers will delight at summer anchorages, taking hikes along cliffy coastal areas of French islands, and occasionally mooring at the forested river banks. Every social sailor will find the usual Naleia spirit to be what s/he most appreciates in life: honest and welcoming people.

French restaurants and brasseries, should satisfy most demanding foodies. This is the land of more types of cheese than days of the year and wines to satisfy every wine buff. Or why not try the local Breton cider? Slow down, enjoy everything around you and you will experience what every French person strives for “le Bonheur”!

On Naleia Yachting Sailing Trips no previous sailing experience is required. The skipper will gradually introduce everyone to the sailing duties, explain the theory and help you understand how it all fits into practice. Expect hands on sailing, sail hoisting, social bonding and one of the most intense holidays of your life.

Explore Morbihan Archipelago and The French Islands

The Brittany sailing trip we prepared allows us to experience the best of the region and introduces us to some unique features of sailing not to be found in the Mediterranean sailing grounds. Tides can be as high as 6 meters resulting in strong currents, local swirls and tidal gates allowing or preventing entrance to some of the ports. We take it as an opportunity to explain to you and practice navigational skills.

Due to the nature of tidal waters, some of our days will be structured according to the tides. We may need to get up early or sail late in order to travel with the tide. Sometimes it may not even be possible to enter the port at the wrong tide. If that happens we will have to wait on anchor for the right level of water.

Sailing up the river estuaries, going through locks, and mooring at the constantly flowing waters is also a new experience to make on this trip. We are keen to enjoy the wind shelter that rivers provide as well as forested surroundings for a peaceful night on board. Naturally, we will also moor at picturesque ports and drop anchor at remote summer anchorages, which we all like so much.

Feel invited to join us sailing in Brittany!

French Coast, Celtic Culture

Visit in the legendary land of Asterix and Obelix. Taste the French cuisine and people watch in the rustic fishing villages. With a bit of luck overhear almost extinct Breton language. Experience the mix of cultures, landscapes and traditions.

Cruising The Morbihan Archipelago

Explore an inland sea with plenty of islands, sandy beaches to relax at and megalithic structures to visit. Navigate the maze of tidal shallows, river estuaries and beautiful summer anchorages. Drop an anchor, swim to the shore and relax on a beautiful beach.

Sailing Atlantic Shores

Experience large tidal differences which cause strong currents and give us a chance to `sail with the tide`. Moor up the forested river estuaries and pass through locks to enter medieval harbours. Feel the sea breeze during the day and the land breeze at night.

Brittany Sailing Trip Itinerary

We are true to the discoverers` spirit and plan our adventures accordingly to the winds, the weather and your wishes. This means the order as well as some of stopovers may be different than presented below. Leave planning at home! The plan showed below is only an indicative itinerary and your trip may differ. Only the mad men sail against the wind!

La Trinité-sur-Mer

Being our starting port La Trinité offers all that we need. Good public communication options to the nearest airports, sheltered marina, supermarkets and great restaurants just nearby. Meet us at the yachts, look out for Naleia flag. After the chaos of first day is over, we dine together and leave the port next day after the breakfast.

Houat and Hœdic

With a population of 335 and 113 respectively these two islands are perfect summer anchorages. We find here sandy beaches, protected anchorages and little villages to explore. We sail towards these islands, drop an anchor, swim and relax. Afterwards we take a dinghy and step ashore to have a pleasant walk to explore a bit of inland.

Belle-Île-en-Mer

Drop anchor in one of the rocky inlets of the biggest island of Brittany. Enjoy the peace, birds singing and waves crashing on the rocks. Get ashore and walk along the cliffy coastline to take in the beauty of the island. Stop in a Creperie on the way back and round the day with a traditional dish of Crepe.

Le Palais

Continue sailing pass the coast of Belle-Île and try dolphin spotting. Moor at Le Palais and explore the defensive citadel as well as the fishing village. Try one of the local restaurants or cook on board with French wine. Enjoy the views of the port from the boat or from the seaside promenade and forget the everyday.

Bono

Sail up the river Auray and enjoy the views passing by. Trees, forests, houses, beaches, fields and sailboats tied up to buoys pass by on both sides of our yacht. Moor near the bridge of Bono town, go ashore and enjoy a lunch French style. Sail back down the river and drop an anchor on a remote island on Morbihan archipelago.

Vannes

Sailing on the waters of Morbihan we need to take care of the tides. We have a certain tidal window to reach a lock which will let us pass into the Mediavial stronghold city of Vannes. We moor the yachts at guest pontoon and within 5 minutes walking we reach the old town walls. It is an afternoon for strolling and taking in the charm of the city.

Gavrinis

Sailing back from Vannes we drop anchor at Gavrinis island and explore an ancient tomb. Build around 5500 years ago this megalithic monument is notable for an abundance of megalithic art. Sailing further we go back to our home marina and have the last captains dinner, sharing favourite memories of the week.

Keep the connection

Day 8 is the day to say goodbye. All the miles sailed, saunas visited, skills gained and time shared with others will make us bond and build relationships. Cherish these, keep in touch and remember that your sailing tribe is there. See you another time!
